Lower Leg Fractures
Fractures may involve the outside (fibula) or inside (tibia) of the lower leg or the bone above the knee (femur). A bad fall or blow to the lower leg can break (fracture) the bone(s) of the lower leg.
Fractures are managed medically. The signs and symptoms of fractures are pain, swelling and bony deformities. X-rays are essential and rapid “reduction” (setting the bones close together for healing) is necessary. In extreme cases, open surgery is necessary to reduce the fracture. Often pins, plates and screws are used to maintain the reduction.
How physical therapy helps
Physical therapy is very important in the rehabilitative process to help you regain normal range of motion, reduce swelling, resolve pain and regain function of your hand and wrist.
Physical therapy is gentle and will help you quickly resolve your pain while working with your doctor to follow protocol and restore your function. With physical therapy, you can make a complete recovery quickly and safely.
